Wd-imsourcing My Book For Mac

Installed a WD My Book for Mac last week and it doesn't seem to be working properly. Time Machine always shows Back Up Delayed (this machine couldn't complete the backup to 'My Book for Mac.' The back up disk could not be found.

Make sure the back up disk is connected.or, it shows Back Up Failed (the back up disk 'My Book for Mac' is not available, yet when I open Time Machine it shows the My Book for Mac as the back up disk. If I disconnect the power and USB cords from the back of the WD device, it powers up and does a back up! Subsequently, the messages above again start to display. Any suggestions?
